Denise Blickhan has been deveÂloÂping her MEDUSA cycle sinÂce 2018; it curÂrÂentÂly comÂpriÂses eleÂven sets of works, each using mulÂti-media perÂforÂmance, instalÂlaÂtiÂon, video, and sound. The cycle is conÂstantÂly groÂwing. D21/Spots presÂents the perÂforÂmance MEDUSA X (icoÂnoÂclasms) which disÂcusÂses quesÂtiÂons of power and idenÂtiÂty through an anaÂlyÂsis of the glance culÂtures of social media.
Multiple levels overÂload, overÂcharÂge and cumuÂlaÂte to build a criÂtiÂcal anaÂlyÂsis of the preÂsent day femaÂle self- and exterÂnal images. Denise Blickhan in her sound-based perÂforÂmanÂces geneÂraÂtes a clausÂtroÂphoÂbic ego-cosÂmos made of voice, body, lyrics and images. In the artist’s absence the spaÂcious staÂge instalÂlaÂtiÂon, in comÂbiÂnaÂtiÂon with sound and video works, remain as perÂforÂmaÂtiÂve relics in the exhiÂbiÂtiÂon conÂtext. The space instalÂlaÂtiÂon Hierarchy invoÂkes quesÂtiÂons of the Beautiful and the Good. Soundscape Garden of Eden and the video pieÂce MEDUSA’s Head conÂvey the emoÂtioÂnal setÂting of the perÂforÂmance as a psychiÂcal landÂsÂcape into the exhiÂbiÂtiÂon space.
