Since it was established in 2006, D21 Kunstraum e. V. has been supporting national and international artistic positions. In divers exhibition formats for media art, film, and video, photography, installation and performance art, in events like festivals, symposia, film screenings, and workshops, and also in publications and art residencies, D21 Artspace has functioned as a platform for presenting and discussing relevant socio-political topics. D21 Artspace sees itself not as static, but as fluid—we are interested in impulses from and reaction to our immediate local, cultural, and political surroundings. Thanks to our continuous presence in the Leipzig art scene and in the course of various projects, we have been able to develop a number of cooperations with arts and culture initiatives in Germany and abroad.
Since 2021, D21 has also been responsible for f/stop Festivals für Fotografie Leipzig. We are working towards its further development as a festival that functions on regional, national, and international levels and not only follows a discursive approach but also combines apparent opposites: east and west, local and international, discipline-specific and audience-oriented, focusing processes and formulating propositions.
Curatorial Program
Since 2006, the exhibition program had been devised by an artistic director (Leif Magne Tangen 2006—2008, Michael Arzt 2008—2012, Lena Brüggemann & Hannah Sieben 2012—2014, Lena Brüggemann 2015—2018).
In 2018, the association decided to create a more open and multi-perspective process of artistic program planning. In 2019, the first advisory board was convoked which outlines the upcoming year’s exhibition program.
